Option Stream Z

This will happen if your tire blows out at 240km/h. It happened when Daijiro Inada tried to beat the high speed record in the Silver State Classic held in the state of Nevada. His goal was to break the record in the unlimited category. It was powered by an VQ35DE engine that had been stroked to 3.8 liter, with the help of a T88 turbo it managed to reach 800bhp.

Check this video on youtube for the crash as it happened.

Being An Engineer At Honda Must Be Nice [Novelties]

Speaking as someone who has done it, being an engineer for any of the not-so-Big Three is something of a soul-crushing endeavor. Deadlines are always too aggressive, budgets are always too small, management never grasps the true complexities of a system, and you inevitably have to deal with totally incompetent suppliers who over promise and under perform. It's a delightful job. That kind of experience makes the open letter from a Honda employee that arrived at the offices of BoingBoing seem like working there is some kind of magical fantasy-land of happy rainbows and pony rides.

Be sure to head over and give it a read, but the email describes a place where the sun rises and sets on curiosity and innovation, where you're more or less free to do as you want and where everyone is treated with respect even in the face of conflict. Sounds like a total fallacy to us. Maybe even Honda propaganda. Take the opening paragraph for instance:

Honda is a freak, by American and even Japanese standards. There is an absolutely astounding amount of room here for anyone to work once they get in. The view is Global and the focus is Local. No one has ever told me what to do. One Rule - Dream. We find our way on an individual level, as reason, interest and inclination dictate, and this is an ultimate form of unequaled personal power to affect the future. In Honda, our own best interests are at the forefront of every day life at work and home. In engineering, there are no lines of demarcation segregating futurists from the present applications of science. There is nothing so esoteric that doesn't deserve a close inspection, and there is a common belief here in doing things the Hard Way. Even so, the core philosophy of the company could best be described as the pursuit of Joys.

It's practically impossible to believe such a place actually exists. If it did you'd have the happiest, most productive, best engineers in the world turning out superior products and doing it while leading the way in innovation. Oh, wait a minute. [BoingBoing]

Commenter Of The Day: Władysław Podkowiński Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

When people think of Impressionist painting they tend to think of French dudes like Monet and Cezanne whose portraits and landscapes cover the walls of the Art Institute of Chicago. Though the French deserve credit for Impressionism, the rest of the world followed the style set forth by the near-sighted Frenchmen. The style spread from San Francisco to Istanbul, from Cairo to San Juan, and even to Warsaw, Poland, where painter Władysław Podkowiński embraced the form. His most famous work is, arguably, Szał Uniesień (or A Frenzy of Exulting), which was fairly well received by the Polish audience. His most notorious painting is probably Ecstasy, which was shown in Warsaw for about a month before Podkowiński decided he didn't like it anymore and ripped it to shreds with a knife, though we've never understood quite why he decided to attack his own work. He died soon after of TB, at the age of only 29, so it is possible he was just going nuts. Or, you know, maybe he was inebriated. Today's reveal of the 2009 Nissan Cube, which has yet to be shredded by its designer, had Boosted Lego Wagon thinking about the impression the Cubist vehicle left on him.

Cubism: when you don't have the Monet for something with a little more Gogh.

I wonder how much for the all-Cezanne tires and rubber floor Matisse.

All we can say is ZUT ALOR!

VIDEO: Relive the 2008 F1 championship in 8 minutes

Click above to watch the video after the jump

The 2008 F1 Drivers World Championship was one of the most exciting in years. Over the course of its 18 races, several drivers and teams had noteworthy performances, with the championship ultimately being decided in the final corner of the final lap of the final race. Those who watched that the race in Brazil will undoubtedly remember the heartbreak of Felipe Massa's family and the jubilation of Lewis Hamilton's girlfriend. While some were quick to blame Timo Glock for his amazing reduction in pace into that final turn, others rightly know that a championship is about the whole season and not just one race. And what a season it was.

For some it was the realization of the promise that Lewis Hamilton showed in his rookie season before his inexplicable late-season collapse last year. For others it was pure devastation at seeing Felipe Massa rise to his own prominence at Ferrari only to see mid-season mistakes rob him of crucial points and ultimately the championship. We just came across a video clip called "Down to the Final Corner." It was compiled by Pistola and it lets you relive the season in about eight minutes. It's a collection of the highs and lows with some of the razzle and dazzle of F1 thrown in for flavor. We've posted it after the jump to remember the season that was. With all of the changes coming to Formula 1 for 2009, we might not see anything like it for a long time to come.

Detroit Free Press to Muscle Car Fans: Don’t Panic

Call us nuts, but we were actually feeling pretty good after reading this piece from the Detroit Free Press. Writer Mark Phelan brings up some great points and actually clues us in on some existing technology that is going to give some immediate help (when implemented) in the fuel economy department of gasoline engines.

There’s so much doom and gloom happening in the media on a nearly daily basis with respect to cars, especially the types of cars we like. It was great to read something that actually gave us some hope for the future that isn’t pie in the sky fantasy.

If you are looking for some positive muscle car ju-ju click on the link to the Detroit Free Press story.

Best of the Autoblog Speech Bubble Comics

Click above to start laughing at our auto bailout speech bubble comics

During the past few weeks during which the auto industry has struggled to secure government loans to stave off bankruptcy, we've covered the proceedings in an unusual way. We found this one picture of the Detroit 3 CEOs during their testimony to Congress that encapsulated what we felt was going on. GM CEO Rick Wagoner and Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli are locked in a stare, just as their companies are locked together as the two most desperately in need of gov't aid. Ford CEO Alan Mulally sits off to the right looking the other way, just as Ford stands apart from its domestic competitors as the only with a shot of surviving without federal funds.

Though the events of the day are serious matters, we had our fun and kept things light by using this image over and over again, each time adding different speech bubbles with what we thought each CEO was thinking. They were fun to create and we didn't expect it to turn into a "thing", but we've gotten so many requests to compile all of these speech bubble comics in one place that today we've decided to oblige. Click below to start from the beginning and there are a few bonus comics at the end from other posts related to the auto industry bailout.
