Commenter Of The Day: Paul's Boutique Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

After their commercially successful Licensed to Ill, the Beastie Boys produced the initially less successful but now well-regarded Paul's Boutique. The typical line on the album is it is now considered one of the best hip hop records of all time but was not understood by the public or their record company. While there is some truth to this view, and to the recognition of the album as setting a new benchmark in sampling thanks to the Dust Brothers, but it misses the negative side. The sampling is so good, mixing Elvis Costello and Sly And The Family Stone, it makes it seem easy, launching some particularly bad performances. Sure, Girl Talk and Dan The Automator can do it with skill, but don't expect Fall Out Boy's producers to be able to pull it off. Seriously, listen to "Shake Your Rump" and catch the combination of Afrika Bambaataa and Led Zeppelin in the same song. Do it wrong and they'll feed you to the bears leaving BlueRSX to make the hilarious photo captioning happen.

Commenter Of The Day: Friday Night Lights Season Three Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

Our love of Friday Night Lights the television show exceeds our love of the book and movie. We appreciate the way it presents both the way we see Texas (ungodly attractive people fueled by determination and courage) and the way Texas often is (full of desperate people clinging to Football to fulfill other unsatisfied desires). Even though almost everyone in the cast looks way too young to be in high school, and the whole murdering a guy thing, it's one of the best shows on television. The story Wes posted about the Texas man who rammed into a woman's car because God said she wan't diving like a Christian launched a dozen great one-liners, but we think abgwin captured the Texan-ness of the moment best.

ah, yes, Texas.

Where the mantra is "the higher the hair, the closer to god" and a bejeweled "JESUS" broach is not considered tacky; after all, they're real diamonds.

Too true, but in Texas' defense we should also mention the woman probably looked like Minka Kelly.

Commenter Of The Day: Władysław Podkowiński Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

When people think of Impressionist painting they tend to think of French dudes like Monet and Cezanne whose portraits and landscapes cover the walls of the Art Institute of Chicago. Though the French deserve credit for Impressionism, the rest of the world followed the style set forth by the near-sighted Frenchmen. The style spread from San Francisco to Istanbul, from Cairo to San Juan, and even to Warsaw, Poland, where painter Władysław Podkowiński embraced the form. His most famous work is, arguably, Szał Uniesień (or A Frenzy of Exulting), which was fairly well received by the Polish audience. His most notorious painting is probably Ecstasy, which was shown in Warsaw for about a month before Podkowiński decided he didn't like it anymore and ripped it to shreds with a knife, though we've never understood quite why he decided to attack his own work. He died soon after of TB, at the age of only 29, so it is possible he was just going nuts. Or, you know, maybe he was inebriated. Today's reveal of the 2009 Nissan Cube, which has yet to be shredded by its designer, had Boosted Lego Wagon thinking about the impression the Cubist vehicle left on him.

Cubism: when you don't have the Monet for something with a little more Gogh.

I wonder how much for the all-Cezanne tires and rubber floor Matisse.

All we can say is ZUT ALOR!
