GT-RR For “R” – Our Latest Build, In Progress

Looking back, we still feel so grateful that last year we were given the chance by two of our clients to build them award winning GT-Rs for last SEMA. One of the biggest rewards of those projects has been the trust placed in us to take on new projects for new clients. This is one of those new projects, and I’m, as always, very excited about it!

Taking advantage of our strong partner network, our client “R” asked us to build him his own version of an ultimate GT-R and to do so on the East Coast of the US. We have been fortunate over the years to have built up an incredible partnership with who we feel are some of the best tuning shops, body shops and partners the industry has to offer and this project was a chance for us to put our partner network into action with a full build!

Recently I bought a brand new GT-R 2010 Premium Edition on behalf of “R” to begin the build. The goal was to buy and build a complete car to be delivered to our client “R” upon completion. You can see the stock 2010 GT-R pictured below. I snapped that picture about 10 days ago, last time I was in New York managing the build. Continue reading at The Real JDM

Driving the 370Z Roadster and NISMO 370Z in Northern California

Last week Ryan and I got the chance to drive the new 370Z Roadster back to back with the NISMO 370Z in Northern California. And I’m not talking about a quick test drive around the block. I’m talking about several hundred miles on the twisty backroads near Santa Cruz. We flew down to San Jose, signed a waiver and the Nissan folks tossed us the keys, along with a suggested route which included a catered lunch and a place to swap cars. Is this a cool job or what?

I can’t see that the Nissan 370Z faces a whole lot of direct completion. Nissan said that buyers don’t cross shop with the Mustang or Camaro, which of course aren’t true sports cars. Ditto for the Hyundia Genesis Coupe. The S2000 is basically history and the Miata is smaller, costs less and is pretty much gutless in comparison. And the Vette, Boxster, Elise and Z4 all cost a lot more. So the 370Z is in a very good space, and Nissan says it is currently the sales leader in the sports car segment.

After a quick pep talk in front of the Hotel Valencia, Ryan and I jumped into a grey Roadster and blasted out toward Santa Cruz. Overall, the new Roadster is a more successful design than the 350Z Roadster that it replaces (it’s also lighter and more powerful). But honestly, the car still looks kind of odd to me. The proportions are great, but something about all details don’t add up to a very flowing or appealing design in my opinion. The interior is nicely done, though, and the newly designed ventilated seats are super comfy and supportive. We didn’t mess with the top much. It was beautiful day so we just left it down.

The first thing I noticed was how stiff it was for a convertible. Nissan said it’s up to 60% stiff than the car that it replaced, and I believe it. It didn’t have quite the carved-out-of-granite stiff feel of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster I drove last year, but that’s a slightly different price point…

Neither of us had driven the new 370Z, so the main thing that got our attention was the SynchroRev Match, which blips the throttle as you downshift. I don’t consider myself any kind of heel and toe master, so even though I’m something of a Luddite, I thought the feature was pretty cool and strangely easy to get used to.

The car has 332 hp, but doesn’t have the low end torque you find in Detroit’s V8 pony cars. Still, the V6 has plenty of power for a car that weighs around 3,400 pounds. So basically, it’s fast, but not scary fast. The exhaust note was a bit of a disappointment, though–it was incredibly muted until you wound the engine out toward its 7,500 rpm redline. But other than improving the exhaust note, all we could ask for was a slightly stiffer suspension. So we were definitely eager to get in the NISMO.

We got our chance after lunch out near Pescadero. Nissan gave us two of them so Ryan and I could chase each other around on the tight twisty roads right off Highway 101. The NISMO comes with a very distinctive body kit which adds six inches to the length. The NISMO seats are supportive and no-nonsense. And that wing has a definite Porsche GT3 vibe.

The NISMO packs an extra 18 hp and a different and slightly more throaty exhaust, but it’s the NISMO-tuned suspension that makes all the difference for this car. This was doubly confirmed when we got to compare it directly with a blue 370Z coupe. The NISMO just hugs the road and never comes unglued.

We couldn’t keep the two cars the whole afternoon, so we turned the silver and red car in for a white NISMO and headed back up Highway 84. I veered off the official route to take Ryan on some of the sketchy roads I used to ride back in my Stanford Cycling days. The NISMO was super confidence inspiring, even on the tightest, twistiest and bumpiest roads.

The NISMO is an absolute blast to drive. This is definitely a car I would want for a weekend and track toy. We were sad to have to turn the keys back over to the Nissan folks.

Ryan and I compared notes on the plane ride back to Seattle. We decided that the car had the perfect match of power and handling for the price. It’s well proportioned and a hoot to drive. But neither of us was sure we could live with the boy racer looks.

Many thanks to Nissan for the opportunity, and for keeping the Z alive all these years. It’s truly in a class by itself.

Nissan NV2500 Concept Wireless Workstation Is Both Futuristic And Comfy [Nissan Nv2500]

One of the most intriguing features from yesterday's Nissan NV2500 Concept, aside from the origami-like folding doors everywhere and fold out steps aplenty, is the central workstation, featuring a striking and Jetsonesque laser keyboard. While not new, laser keyboards haven't had the market penetration their inventors hoped for yet and public awareness of the product like this one from Celluon makes it seem like a whiz-bang feature from a Buck Rogers future.

That fancy-pants keyboard folds away into a kiosk holding a mounted flatscreen monitor running a nondescript computer able to hook up to the internet via a 3G wireless connection. Great stuff for reviewing drawings and proposals, then selling angry emails at inept zoning and inspection officials. To make things more comfy, Nissan equipped this industrial workhorse with a layout that makes the normal jobsite office of piece of plywood over two sawhorses look like it came from the stone age. The swiveling seat does double duty as both passenger seat and super comfortable double-armed work chair, hey, it even swivels around to talk shop over the folding mini-conference table.

This brings us to a sad point. This panel van has a nicer work center than we do, and we work on computers all day. Aside from the silly and hard to use laser keyboard, this thing with its overhead skylight, the natural bamboo walls and floor, the nice airy environment when all the doors are open and that swank chair it all makes our blogging burrow seem pretty funky.

Automakers tapped by CAR to redesign Santa's sled

Click above for a high-res image of Santa Claus' Bentley Continental GTC

Thanks to CAR and a few masters of vehicular design, Santa is bringing some serious automotive enthusiast cheer. The glossy euro mag asked designers from Ford, Bentley, Nissan and Rolls-Royce to design some sleighs for Santa, and while a few of them look to be from the land of misfit toys -- and one of them looks like Santa's Death Star -- it's a fabulously cool exercise. Nissan's intergalactic sleigh is pulled by a GT-R, Bentley's got a W12-powered sled, Ford's got some popout snowboard action happening, and the Rolls sleigh looks, of course, like Santa should have a snifter of Louis XIV in one delicately gloved hand while an elf named Jeeves tends the Smythson leather reins. Check them all out here.

LeMons Veteran SE-R Triumphs In NASA Performance Touring Race At Infineon [Racing]

Remember the SE-R that we saw at the Arse Freeze-A-Palooza '07 race, the one that placed 5th? Krider Racing (who won the LeMons SF '08 race, got their Chrysler Cordoba into the California State Demolition Derby Championship, and apparently plan to take on every form of racing the planet has to offer) spent a few more bucks on their SE-R and took it to the NASA Performance Touring race at Infineon. Make the jump for the whole batch of photos and the official Krider press release.

Krider Racing took their LeMons Thunderhill veteran SE-R, added a few more safety items, spent a lot more than $500 and convinced an official to issue the car a racing log book. Then they took the car racing in NASA’s Performance Touring series. How does an ex-LeMons car fare? Pretty darn well, it turns out. In 2008, Krider Racing won four Performance Touring F races at Infineon while racing alongside the United States Touring Car Championship cars.

“When we told the rest of the drivers in our class that they had just been beaten by a LeMons car, the look on their face was priceless,” said Rob Krider. “But remember boys and girls, the important lesson here is this: you can take a LeMons car and make it a real racecar, but don’t be foolish enough to think you can take a real racecar to LeMons. That will only get you a date with the dozer. Just ask Team Salazar Racing or Team Fantasy Junction. Our SE-R will never run LeMons again, we spent way to much money on it after Thunderhill. I don’t want to see that thing under a tractor.”
